It is with great pleasure that we present this issue of Rock ‘N Roll Stars magazine, from 1956. The mag focuses on the main stars of the moment and holds no less than 12 pages on Elvis.
This was number 1 in a series of 3 Rock n Roll Stars issues .
Issue # 2 featured a rare full color Elvis cover, shot during the
songs performed at the picknick in Love Me Tender.
The 3rd and final issue had half of the cover dedicated to him
on stage ( in color) in Philladelphia, April 1957, and half to
pretty boy Tommy Sands, who couldn’t sing his way out of a
shoebox….
Beware, all 3 issues are available in both American and UK
editions. Never go for the UK issues as they are poorly
printed. Way too dark, killing the rareness of most photographs
featured inside.
Thanks, Jans, and thanks Bob for the crisp scans of pages dating
back some 57 years in age!
What a great collection of photos, many from the Wertheimer camera!!
Hey, the pics on pages 5 and 7 where he´s in front of a curtain surely come from the same day as the famous one where he has his arms completely stretched.
Any idea when and where they were taken?
Thanks a lot, Ger, Bob and Jans!!
Josep, the ones in front of the curtain, and the one- bottom page 7- with the
polka dots shirt, originate from Las Vegas, April-May ’56.
The stretched arms shot mentioned by you is from Dayton Ohio… that is,
if we talk about the same shot?! There’s one from Vegas where’s got his
arms in the air…wearing the same polka dot shirt. In Dayton he’s wearing
a plain ( Red?) shirt without a print motive underneath a sportscoat.
Thanks for the info, Ger.
Somehow those pics reminded of another one – there´s so many of ´em !!
Following your hint about Dayton, I´ve searched James V. Roy´s site and found the one I meant. It´s actually from Columbus, May 26, photo by Phil Harrington. But from Dayton, on May 27, there´s another impressive and classic pic, by Marvin Israel, where he´s got his legs and left arm stretched too, and he´s looking to the floor. Pure rock and roll, for sure…
Can´t remember – or have never seen – the one from Vegas you mention, though.
What I would give to have attended one of those 1956 shows, man…

Great stuff and thanks Jans for making this great magazine available. Hopefully other fans will open their archives as well…
The shot on page 13 was brilliantly drawn by Ger in IET 161 from 1983 with a much nicer background…
Great info, Ger. Provided the first chance for Brazilian fans see this legendary magazine series.
Thank you.
