“Elvis Presley For President” (1956)
By Ger Rijff
“He’s all for love, love, love
He’s all for kiss, kiss, kiss
He’s all for hug, hug, hug, hug, hug
Who else can give you this?!
Because a vote for him
Is a vote for Rock ‘n’ Roll
Elvis Presley (yesss!) for President!”
Unforgettable lyrics, heard on Lou Monte‘s RCA release Elvis Presley For President, from the summer of 1956.
1956: the year American citizens could vote for a new President. It was a race between Dwight (Ike) D. Eisenhower for the Republicans, and Adlaie Stevenson, candidate for the Democrats. Ike won big time on election day, in November of that year.
Did Lou Monte’s call to vote for Elvis got any support? Yes, indeed it did! No less than 5000, by write-in, voted Elvis for President!
Only in America, friends. Only in America!
Thanks to Jans for helping to find the Lou Monte advertisement.
How cool is that! A single in 1956 titled ‘Elvis For President’!
Never knew that! Great articles again Ger, thanks!
What a year 1956 was …
I just watched my super 8mm version of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan shows … an old 8mm projector in the room and Elvis on that big screen, nothing beats that, even Superman would be jealous haha!
I voted for Ral Donner!
Make up your mind, Trevor!
Last time we spoke you said you had voted for Stan Freberg!
I have the RCA 45 and the Lou Monte button. My quest for the sheet music continues!
Well, I think he is a good candidate!
:-) I like Elvis!
