Elvis and The Beatles
By Ger Rijff
The true Kings of collectibles!
Nothing before (or since) in pop culture can compare to the enormous amount of items made, dedicated to Elvis and The Beatles in their heydays. It’s staggering! Charm bracelets, dolls, board games, record players, perfums, skirts and dresses …
Hundreds of different items were made available to the fans back in the 1950’s and 60’s. Kitsch? In many cases the answer is yes. But of the kind that’s highly collectible! A feast for the eyes. Join us on a journey back to the days of teen-innocence!
Before we dive into the 2nd part of our Elvis vs The Beatles memorabilia topic, we would like to invite our Dutch speaking friends to pay the Dutch Beatles fanclub a visit at www.beatlesfanclub.nl
I also wrote a little story for that site: check it out HERE!
A cool topic on the magazine Elvis is holding can be found HERE!
And a topic on the magazine Paul is holding can be found HERE!
Alright. On with the show!
More soon!
Great article, looking forward to the next instalment. This is the first time I’ve seen an advert for the 1957 UK Selco guitar – 79 schillings – only for the wealthy. Just a note there are 4 different ones I know of – a Selco junior, Selco brown and cream (the one in the above advert), and Selco all cream, and a full picture version with the words “Elvis Presley Gitar’. Keep up the great work!
Take care
Harry
Now thats something else … fantastic job … those were the days!
Love those nice EPE memorabilia pics dudes. Especially the ‘one year’ Diary.
C.
I want the Elvis sneakers – I wonder how many pairs still exist!
Great article – Cheers, Piers
Great stuff, you´re one of the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice to read only positive comments on this topic. Normally, when one presents the
5 true Kings of popular music under one roof, the anti Beatles mafia feel they need
to stamp out the 4 from Liverpool. Such rubbish! Thank you people, who visit us, for
being different to those brainless people posting elsewhere.
Being a massive fan of both Elvis and The Beatles since I was about 9 (now 42), this is great to see. I agree with Ger Rijff, the music of both of these artists is just sublime. They are the true kings of music! I can understand back in the 60’s why people felt they had to only like one or the other, but not today. They both stand shoulders above anything that has gone since!
Classic!
Love to have the Elvis Hat and the night case. Cool!
Amazing stuff, I didn’t realize the marketing was the same on so many items! Was the Col behind both? I have been looking for a complete 1956 card display box for years. Nice to see it here.
Call me an arrogant ba…., call me bigheaded…but where, in this Universe, will you
find a cool and fun topic such as this one?! I mean, this is so flipping good and so
entertaining , it stands alone, high above anything else found on Elvis websites.
Gawd, Bob, were absolutely fab!
Now how about that photo of Paul & George? Bob found it, and surprised me, for
I had never seen it before . I do remember the page of the Elvis story the lads are
looking at… Was this photo made during their visit to the Netherlands, back in 1964?
Somewhere in the back of my mind it sez this is a Dutch pop mag … Not Muziek
Express… Was it Muziek Parade, or Teenbeat perhaps? Anybody out there who
might remember? Jans, maybe?
Your comments, please.
It’s from the Dutch Muziek Expres, Aug. 1964.
A story by Jan Storm about the movie Roustabout.
An amazing topic ! Thanks again.
I knew we could count on you, Jans! Let’s see if we can put the Muziek
Expres story on line in one of the future Elvis & Beatles episodes.
Thanks, bro!
Great to see these greatest icons of popular music ever united in colectibles. Great article, superb presentation guys, keep them coming!
Very interesting!! Fun topic!!
Interesting persons make fun topics, Jove!
What took you so long to make it to Echoes…?
It’s the place to be! Dig the groove, baby!
Like really out-a-sight!
Thanks for sharing this great material.
The Paul earrings are made from a guitar pick which is fairly recent, though. But the other material, from back then, is fantastic!
Hi Beatle Presley! Thanks for your comment and correction on the Paul
earrings. If I can find the real 60s ones, we’ll replace the newer ones.
Talking Paul: have you seen the photo of him visiting Elvis his grave, a couple
of days ago, while he and his band played concerts in Memphis?!
Paul placed a guitar pick on the gravestone, and paid his respects…
More, lots more Elvis & Beatles memorabilia will go online soon.
Don’t miss it!
Some superb items, thanks for sharing them, Alan.
What a fantadtic thread!! Beautiful presentation, one that i’m going to savour for a long time.
Hey, bro Bob, it’s time for another chapter to be added to
this topic. We still have plenty of goodies to put online.
Going by the very favourable comments so far, it’s not just
me who likes The Fab Four a whole lot! And our visitors
from Russia can do with some new stuff as well.
Great presentation, mister Bob! It’s one of my favourite topics
out of the 50 plus different ones we’ve done so far.
A little info on the two comic books from the sixties: The Batman
cover had everything to do with the strong rumour doing the rounds
,circa 1967, Beatle Paul had died, and was replaced by a look-a-like.
This was serious news back then, and many ‘death’ theories made
the printed press worldwide. Even television got involved with serious
discussion panels talking about the Paul McCartney mystery…
Back in 1969 superhero Spider-man faced a new enemy named
Marko. Dressed up in a two piece black leather suit, quiff and sideburns,
bad boy Marko kicked the living daylight out of Spidy.
In December of 1968 the NBC Elvis show was broadcasted on television,
making a big impact on the millions of viewers. One of them that night
was the legendary Stan Lee. Lee was the Ace writer and boss of Marvel
comics. Besides that, he was also, and still is, a huge fan of Elvis.
Marko ( 5 letters…) was Lee’s way of saying: “Yeah, Elvis, you’ve proved
once and for all, you’re still on top of the game…Kick ass, baby !”
My story isn’t theory, it’s fact.
Remember, you first read about it here in Echoes Of The Past. Yessiree!
Brilliant merchandise.
For many people in Europe the holiday season
has started… If you have a special interest in The
Fab 4, now is your last chance to visit ‘Beatlemania’
in Hamburg , Germany. At the end of this month ,
the five storey museum will close down for good due
to lack of visitors…For future Beatle related trips
one has to go to Liverpool, where the Elvis & Beatles
exhibition is still pulling in big crowds daily.
No Beatles, but lots of sixties Elvis under the Spanish
sun in the city of Zaragoza, June 29 coming.
The club Elvis Spain celebrates its 22nd birthday ,
with many live bands performing that day.
Check it out on Facebook…
Have fun if you’re in the neighborhood of Zaragoza.
Putting your cigarette butt in your heoes face…
The 1956 round shaped and the 1964 rectangular shaped
glass plates are not made to serve milk / tea and biscuits for an
afternoon snack. They actually are ASH TRAYS!
What an unique way to show how much you loved your heroes…
Thanks for writing about Elvis and The Beatles.
